point pelee

résister…

I was recently fortunate to attend a birding tour with IndieGo Birding on a trip to Canada. For several days, we were able to visit Point Pelee National Park, surrounded by Lake Erie, as well as many other nature preserves and unique birding spots.

I love the birds and it hurts to see any human litter in these important habitats. While walking the 2.5 kilometer road to the point, I chose to collect litter in a yard bag I’d purchased from a nearby grocer. In just over a mile and a half, I probably picked up 8-10 pounds of litter (my cool comrades in birding estimated).

As an observation, I appreciated the electric shuttle that transported tourists and visitors to the delicate point. This eroding coast line is an important ecological area for migrating birds and pollinators. While the Trump administration is moving ahead with a plan to repeal the "roadless rule," I wish there were similar considerations, beyond economics, to continue protecting our nation’s natural wonders from road construction while still making them accessible to all nature lovers and guardians.

We have agreed not to drive our automobiles into cathedrals, concert halls, art museums, legislative assemblies, private bedrooms and the other sanctums of our culture; we should treat our national parks with the same deference, for they, too, are holy places.
