small is beautiful
economics as if people [and nature] mattered…
I’m currently reading a book by E. F. Schumacher. Written in 1973, his wisdom on economics is relevant today. A passage I wanted to share from his chapter, The Proper Use of Land, connects to my purpose with ObLITTERate:
“Any society can afford to look after its land and keep it healthy and beautiful in perpetuity.... In the simple question of how we treat the land, next to people our most precious resource, our entire way of life is involved, and before our policies with regard to the land will really be changed, there will have to be a great deal of philosophical, not to say religious, change.”
I deeply believe that the health of our natural environment sustains us - nothing exists in isolation. If we do not care for the land (and air and water) and all living creatures, their deterioration is our deterioration. “Philosophical” thinking, in a sense, is the notion that beliefs and behaviors are bidirectional. When we know better, we do better. I encourage others to find at least one way of caring with thought and action.
